Back to lockdown
Ireland moved for the second time in lockdown mode during the covid 19 pandemic. This time, it was called level 5 which meant that we had many restrictions in place again. The one we were most interested in (or disappointed in) was the 5 km restriction for working out (fitness). Where we love surfing along the coast in the northwest of Ireland and love mountain biking at Coolaney national mountain bike park, these pleasures were now off-limit again.
Where we had indulged in food and wine during the first lockdown with as result a significant weight gain , this time we would go the other direction and work out during the 6 weeks leading up to December. Where plans have been made to go on a few cycle adventures in 2021, the longest being a cycle from Alicante to Lisbon, the urgent need exist to lose weight and get back in great shape to take on this cycle adventures.
Where we are not sure if we will be able to travel during 2021, we have decided to work towards these deadlines and just go with the flow. So with these adventures in mind, we decided to go on daily micro-adventures and show that you can have fun within a 5 km radius

Week# 1: Getting into the swing of things
Week# 1 was a week where we got used to being outside again. During October, darkness arrives around 5:30pm, so all our micro adventures basically happen in darkness.
Living in the countryside in the Northwest of Ireland, we are lucky that we have a natural playground on our doorstep. On our doorstep, we have old bog roads, forests, a lake or two and quiet country roads, .... so the perfect open air playground |
Week# 2: Halloween and the clocks go back an hour
Week# 2 arrived with a bang. Halloween brought an amazing full moon which lit up the many nightly micro adventures.
Walking along the remote bog roads guided by the moonlight is just fabulous. After the long, busy days at work , it is just the perfect way to chill, fill up those lungs with fresh air and get fit again. During week 2, we introduced nightly cycles and started fine-tuning our navigational skills again. |
Week# 3: Well used to the rain by now
Week# 3 brought a lot of rain. Running
Running through darkness with rain droplets running down your face, you know you are alive. During the weekends, we manage to do longer micro-adventures and venture further within our 5km radius. And do you know, we managed to plan a cycle trip within the 5km radius with a total distance of 42km without having to cycle on the same road twice. |
