"Let's pop up to Cong for the morning". Those words would be the start to our micro adventure to the beautiful village of Cong in co.Mayo.
Cong is beautiful, it is surrounded by forests, rivers and is home to the famous Ashford Castle. So after having strolled around the landscaped gardens of Ashford castle and through the village, we knew it was time to fuel-up. We were parked close to the hungry Monk Cafe ( http://www.hungrymonkcong.com ), and looking at the amount of people in the little cafe eating lunch or having a tea or coffee, we thought we couldn't go wrong with having lunch in this establishment. You enter the cafe through a half door which matches the design of the cafe perfectly. Inside the cafe , we were welcomed by the cosy interior. The lunch menu is available on a large blackboard on the wall, and we must say there were a lot of contenders which we wanted to try for our lunch.
I decided on the Kelly's sausage sandwich served on a "Blaa" Bap with slow cooked onions, Jalapeno Mayo and a side salad and potato wedges. Dolores went for the cod and parsley fishcakes,.... Both dishes arrived not to long after having them ordered, all freshly prepared and very tasty indeed. The food went down a treat. Although we wanted to try some deserts, we decided it was time to hit the road again. We would recommend the Hungry Monk Cafe highly , the food is fresh, colourful and very tasty and the service was great. There is a relaxed atmosphere inside the cafe although by the time we were leaving, all tables were occupied. The prices are correct and as you would expect for lunch in Ireland. We believe that it could be difficult enough to get a table in this great cafe during high season, but i suppose that is up to you to find out for yourselves.
