Winter in the Ox Mountains

The Ox Mountains are a mountain range in Co.Sligo. The Ox Mountains are probably not that well known outside of Ireland, especially with Benbulben and Knocknarea in the vicinity.
But on this winter's day, we found ourselves deep into the Ox Mountains. The North facing mountain flanks still had a little bit of snow lingering on the steep slopes since the snowfall of the previous night.

Small rivers are flanked by conifers, higher up the mountains you find blanket bog. The Ox Mountains are peaceful, and on this particular day we shared the paths and mountains with just a few sheep.
Hiking through the Ox Mountains is fantastic, and as it was the day before New years Eve we enjoyed the fresh crisp air. Although hiking in the Ox Mountains is easy enough, Irish weather is unpredictable. Where the day starts out sunny, the weather can quickly deteriorate. So, always come prepared and well equiped.

The small streams were cold, the trails were wet, but it didn't stop us discovering this beautiful mountain range.
The highest peak in the Ox Mountains is Knocknalongy, which stands 544 meters high. Getting to these peaks, although not being that high at all, will take some time due to the surface of blanket bog, shrubs,... which sometimes feel like they are ready to swallow your boots
Be prepared to get muddy, tired and maybe wet, but with the right gear that shouldn't be a problem.
So next time you find yourself in Co.Sligo, why not venture into the Ox Mountains and discover a desolate landscape.
Discover the wilderness of the Irish countryside, meet the local sheep or just rewild yourself, but mainly just enjoy yourself.
Be safe out there.
