Safeguarding the environment

Environmental awareness

At www.outdoorfitnesssligo.com , our mission is to spend as much time as possible out in mother nature. But it is not just being in the great outdoors which makes us happy, it is safeguarding the environment for future generations as well. Both Peter and Dolores are environmental scientists who through work and at home -  educate, implement behaviour change and implement sustainable / environmental projects.

Through our work and our hobbies, we find ourselves a lot in the great outdoors which in our opinion provides us with the perfect gym. From trail running to open water swimming through cycling, mother nature provides us with the perfect outdoor playground. Be being in the great outdoors is also a brilliant tonic to destress in todays modern society.

So why is humanity still polluting the natural world around us?

In our opinion, it is really important to safeguard the environment.

It really breaks our heart when we see the amount of rubbish laying around. In Ireland alone, a country deemed abundant in natural beauty, it is shocking to see how much rubbish is thrown out of car windows and illegally dumped along the countryside. Environmental sustainability needs to be present in all what we do. Rather than building another motorway, maybe it is time to invest in cycling and public transportation infrastructure. Future planning is all about sustainability...

For years, we have grown our own vegetables which results in fresh produce with zero foodmiles.  Did you ever ask yourself how far your food has travelled to get to your kitchen table? But we want to do much more, plant native trees, introduce bees, ....

For 2022, we have decided to plant 1000 native trees (1st goal which will be increased) on our land which is located in the northwest of Ireland. But that is not all, our ultimate target is to create a 6 acre sanctuary where flora and fauna can thrive.  We are also introducing native black bees which will provide pollination,...

So where do you come in... rather than the " buy me a coffee" you see on many websites, we introduced a "buy me a tree" . With each of the €5 we receive through donations, we will buy a tree and plant it on our 6 acre plot. We will upload each planted tree on the website and dedicate it to its sponsor.
So if you feel like sponsoring a tree and let us "rewild" a 6 acre plot, hit the link below:
